Visual Kei (ヴィジュアル系, lit. "visual type") is a term usually related to Japanese Rock music referring to bands whose primary point of interest for their fans is their costume and appearance.

A notable difference between Visual Kei and boy bands is that boy bands are usually prefabricated by an external music producer and start with a strong marketing campaign, while there are a lot of indie Visual Kei bands that won't get promoted unless they first gain popularity and sign with a major label. Another notable difference is that most boy bands do not compose their own songs, while Visual Kei bands usually do.

Members of Visual Kei bands often wear striking makeup, style their hair in dramatic shapes, reminiscent of "hair bands" from the '80's, and wear elaborate costumes. Although the vast majority of the musicians are male, they often wear makeup and clothing which would be considered "feminine". [IT IS NOT FEMININE!!!!!!!!!! T_T]

Visual Kei, being based upon visual style, is therefore a genre of band but not a specific type of music. The bands most often play J-Rock.

Western observers sometimes confuse Visual Kei bands with goth bands because of the occasionally similar makeup and clothing, but most Japanese goths do not consider Visual Kei to be gothic, and there is very little cultural crossover between Japanese Visual Kei fans and Japanese goths beyond the outer fringes of the "Gothic Lolita" fashion, which was influenced by elements of gothic style.

Gothic Lolita or "GothLoli" (ゴスロリ, gosurori) is a fashion somewhat rare, but very highly visible, among Japanese teenagers and young women. It emphasizes victorian-styled girl's clothing and often aims to imitate the look of Victorian porcelain dolls. Gothloli's name and origin is a combination of lolita fashion—appearing deliberately cute to the point of looking childish— and certain styles found within gothic fashion.

Variations of the Gothic Lolita look include "Classic Lolita" (more traditional, light-coloured and "girlish" clothing) and "Elegant Gothic Lolita" (EGL, which focuses upon the pastiche of upper class victorian fashion found in old horror films.). [woot!!! EGL rocks!!!] The male analog to this fashion is called "Elegant Gothic Aristrocrat" (EGA) which shares EGL's emphasis on the Victorian era, though not on children's clothing.

Mana (ex Malice Mizer) is widely credited for having popularised GothLoli. He coined the terms Elegant Gothic Lolita (EGL) and Elegant Gothic Aristocrat (EGA) to describe the style of his own fashion label, Moi-même-Moitié. He is a cross dresser... >.<

Style youself!
Gothic Lolita style is usually a combination of black and white, often black with white lace and typically decorated with ribbons and lace trims.

Skirts are knee length and may have a crinoline to add volume. As in mainstream Japanese fashion, over-knee socks or stockings are extremely popular. Black fishnet stockings and white or black tights are also common.

Shoes or boots with high heels- though not usually stiletto heelssuch as Mary Janes, complete the look.

Some additions may include an "Alice in Wonderland"-style apron, tiny top hats, parasols, lace gloves, and lace headpieces. Mostly black or white, headgear might consist of a headband with ruffles, ribbons, lace or bows.

Makeup is used sparingly and is seen more often with EGL styles than with other GothLoli styles. Black eyeliner is typical. A pale complexion is preferred, so white foundation might be used. Red or black lipstick is seen but lighter makeup is the rule.

Still, NOT GOTHIC...

"Gothloli" as a fashion is not as strongly associated with a particular style of music or outside interests as "Goth", and individual followers of Gothloli fashion may listen to a wide variety of music including regular Japanese pop.
