Visual Kei (ヴィジュアル系, lit. "visual type") is a term usually related to Japanese rock music, referring to bands whose primary point of interest for their fans is their costume and appearance. A notable difference between Visual Kei and boy bands is that boy bands are usually prefabricated by an external music producer and start with a strong marketing campaign, while there are a lot of indie, Visual Kei bands that won't get promoted unless they first gain popularity and sign with a major label. Another notable difference is that most boy bands do not compose their own songs, while Visual Kei bands usually do.

Members of Visual Kei bands often wear striking makeup, style their hair in dramatic shapes and wear elaborate costumes. Although the vast majority of the musicians are male, they often wear makeup and clothing which would be considered "feminine". [SO NOT FEMININE!!!]

Visual Kei, being based upon visual STYLE, is therefore a genre of band but not a specific type of music. The bands most often play J-Rock.

Western observers sometimes confuse Visual Kei bands with Goth bands because of the occasionally similar makeup and clothing, but most Japanese goths do not consider Visual Kei to be gothic, and there is very little cultural crossover between Japanese Visual Kei fans and Japanese goths beyond the outer fringes of the "Gothic Lolita" fashion, which was influenced by elements of gothic style.

Therefore, Visual Kei has really nothing to do with Goth... Then we ask, what is a Goth or Goth fashion?

Goth is a modern subculture that gained visibility during the early 1980s within the gothic rock scene, a sub-genre of post punk, and continues to this day. It is associated with gothic tastes in music and clothing. Styles of dress range from gothic horror, punk, Victorian, fetish, cybergoth, androgyny, and/or lots of black.

Typical goth dress consists of black clothing accessorized with silver and/or pewter. The stereotypical gothic outfit, referred to jokingly as the "mopey" or "romantic" look, is limited only by what the wearer thinks he or she can pull off, and can (and frequently does) include elaborate gowns and corsets, veils, teased hair, lots of eyeliner, fishnets, and styles borrowed from the Elizabethans and Victorians. Also popular are tight-fitting trousers, flouncy shirts in the manner of Lord Byron, and anything with buckles on it. The nature of the event will to some degree dictate the dress code, but personal style is generally more important, and it's not unusual for several club-goers on a given night to appear dressed to the nines for no apparent reason.

Those in the Goth scene tend to view the Goth concept rather as an expression of individuality, something they take part in because it seems comfortable and natural for them to do so, rather than because it's something they want to be. And as such, Goth is a state of mind. As with states of mind you either feel happy/warm/hungry/angry or you don't; you don't wake up and say 'Hey, I'll feel warm this week!'. Either you feel warm or you don't. It is not something you decide to be, it's more like a drifting into something and realising at some point that you've found what you have always been looking for. Goth is not about being cool-hip, up-to-date. Goth is more about being cool-chilly as in unemotional, detached, unmoved... at least on the surface. There's an inner calmness, tranquillity to it. A need for being given and giving the others space to be at one with themselves. Respect towards the individual - at least as long as it is a fellow Goth.

On the flip-side of this respect for other people's space, there tends to be a calm but deep disrespect, loathing almost, towards people who just want to be trendy. This explains the tensions between 'Goth wannabes' and 'real Goths'. The 'real Goth' believes in 'Goth' as a genuine lifestyle; the wannabe just considers it cool to dress in an attempt to intimidate. [ You have no idea how many goths wannabes there are out there! It's creeping me out!!!! *gonk* ] They have no respect for the messages the bands are trying to convey about individuality; they just want to be part of a 'weird, scary group'. The wannabes express their individuality by belonging to a group, while Goths belong to a group by expressing their individuality. For a Goth, first comes the state of mind and then the dress code; for a wannabe it's the dress code first. Wannabes have a dubious mindset and a desire to remain part of the mainstream because they fear the reaction of 'society' if they were to deviate from it long-term. Goths on the other hand generally don't give a toss about what society thinks or does - as long as they are left alone.

Goths take things that society claims are evil, sinful, painful, or wrong, and make them beautiful.
But neither black, nor anything else visible to the eye, is an absolute necessity. Many stereotypical Goth items are 'dress code' in certain situations, just as a tuxedo is at a formal party. But a Goth might only wear his blacks to parties, and wear regular stuff most of the time. Remember, Goth is first of all a state of mind.

Goths also are kinda obsessed with depression and death. They also have an aura of mystery around them. Not so if they don;t talk much, if you don't talk much, you're just an introvert. They have a deep thinking and stuff. ^_^

Well, there. I hope I don't need to repaste everything again.... =( There's a difference between Visual Kei and Goth. I hope that guy I met realizes this. I'm just a visual kei fan, not a gothic fan... don't talk to me about blood... =( I don't like Goths actually.... o.O I'm not against them, well it depends on who you are, a goth wannabe, or a real goth. XD As long as you don't talk to me about death, the black "bible" and cutting. You are ok to me! o.O Omg, I'm odd... o.O
